Unusual Wedding Flowers

Have you considered what flowers you would like in your wedding flowers? Now we all know the classic ones, which of course are classic for a reason, they are beautiful and work in harmony together. The likes off Roses, Lisianthus, Gypsophila, Snapdragons to name a few, however this BLOG is all about highlighting those flowers that are not seen so much in wedding flowers, the β€œUnusual Wedding Flowers”. They are perfect for couples who want to full-on break away from any wedding traditions or for couples who just want to add something a bit different to their wedding flowers.

Those flowers that have made the list are ones I have come across and admired being a florist, that make me stop and go wow that is stunning and would look amazing as a wedding flower. Enjoy the list and I hope you take some inspiration from this. Also I’ve added a bonus mini list on foliage at the end.

Unusual Flowers

Protea

Pink Protea

These large headed bold stems come in a variety of colours and styles, they can be a real focal feature within any bridal bouquet or arrangement.

Anthuriums

Pink Anthurium Bridal Bouquet

One of my absolute favs, these again come in a variety of colours and look great at different heights within bouquets and backdrops. They add a modern vibe to any wedding and work well with lots of other brightly coloured blooms.

Sunflowers

Sunflower Rainbow Bridal Bouquet

I debated putting this one on the list, as they do appear semi regularly but they are just simply to beautiful to leave off the list. They really add a punch to wedding, the bright colour of them brings some a joyful feel to your wedding flowers and feels like sunshine is all around you. I’m just envisaging a room full of Sunflowers.

Orchids (Phalaenopsis)

Phalaenopsis Orchid

These bold and extravagant stems really had a wow factor to wedding flowers. They can be large and bouncy in bouquets and add a modern touch to weddings. They pair well be other bit bold stems and heavily floral based designs. There are other varieties of Orchid but this style works really in bouquets and larger arrangements.

Calla Lily

Yellow Calla Lily

This trumpet style flower is very ornate and can add touches of elegance. It comes in a wide variety of colours and makes an ideal buttonhole for the groom that wants minimal flowers.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia)

Birds of Paradise (Strelitzia)

An absolutely unique style of flower, it is a tropical flower that boasts bright orange flowers that effectively look like a bird (hence the name). These flowers look amazing teamed up with tropical style foliage and alongside flowers such as Heliconia and Kniphofia.

Dahlias

Dahlias when in season are very popular, the level of variety you can get with dahlias is incredible. You could literally have a bouquet made up of Dahlias and it would still be exquisite. They vary in colour, style, shape, and size (there are some the size of your head…I’m talking about you Peppermint Dahlia.

Clematis (Amazing Kibo)

A bit of a left-field one this one, Clematis is a beautiful flower in its own right. Amazing Kibo Clematis comes after Clematis has flowered (this is what has happened with my Clematis in the garden). These cute slightly bizarre looking flowers add a certain whimsy to a bouquet or arrangement. They remind me of the flowers in the kids film The Lorax.

Heliconia

Another tropical flower, I went to French Polynesia on honeymoon last year and these were everywhere and used in so many flower displays. They are beautiful and bold, again perfect for a colour loving couple or a couple who loves that tropical feel to things.

Celosia

The brains of florals…they look like brains. Sounds gross but they are beautiful and amazingly soft to tough. There is also a version that is much more upright and fluffy in bright colours which also looks great in floral display. I actually used these in my own bridal bouquet.

Amaranthus

Amaranthus come in a variety of colours burgundy, biscuit brown colour (Hot Biscuits) and a lime green. They can be upright or drooping over. The drooping style is great for bouquets and all style of wedding arrangements, they sit really well at the edge of designs creating additional and unique visual interest.

Kniphofia (Red Hot Poker)

Such a vibrant and fun flower (my sister has these growing in her garden) they are a tall flower and vibrant orange, red or yellow colours. They are not something you would traditionally consider a wedding flower but they are amazing and would look so cool at a wedding.

FOLIAGE

Tropical Foliage

Tropical foliage is so much fun…it involves different colours and styles that you do not get in traditional foliage and can add a bit of excitement and fun to your wedding flowers.

Moss

Great for finishing of displays and giving that natural feel. Although for the bolder, colour loving amongst you, you can get dyed moss in all manner of bright colours which could make a truly unique wedding display of its own.

Dyed Asparagus Fern

This stuff is beautiful it comes in all sorts of colours and can just add that additional bit of colour and texture to floral designs.

This list is not exhaustive but it is just some alternative wedding flower ideas for couples who would to try something different and diverge from the norm. Equally combining these with some more traditional wedding flowers works fantastically as well. Just remember β€˜you do you’ go for what you like or ask your florist how different flowers can be paired together.
